Background

Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas was used as a contrast agent in the venous circulation in the 1950s for the diagnosis of pericardial effusion. Studies in animals and patients demonstrated that a bolus intravenous injection of CO2 in quantities of 100 to 200 cc caused no significant changes in vital signs.
